How Chicago inspections work
- How do I check a Chicago restaurant's health inspection results?
- Search by the restaurant's name (or its 'doing business as' name) to see every inspection the Chicago Department of Public Health has performed there since 2010 — the result, the risk level, and the specific violations inspectors cited.
- What does 'Pass with Conditions' mean on a Chicago inspection?
- The establishment passed, but inspectors found violations of critical or serious food-safety rules that were corrected during the inspection or given a deadline. A 'Fail' means violations serious enough that the establishment must fix them and be re-inspected — it doesn't always mean it was closed.
- How often are Chicago restaurants inspected?
- It's risk-based. Risk 1 establishments (most restaurants, which handle raw food extensively) are inspected roughly twice a year; Risk 2 about once a year; Risk 3 (pre-packaged food only) about every two years — plus complaint-driven and follow-up inspections at any time.
